How to follow up after a job application
A useful follow-up is brief, specific, and timed around the employer's process. It cannot force a decision, but it can confirm your interest and make it easier for the right person to understand why you applied.
Check the employer's instructions first
Review the original posting, application confirmation, and careers page for a stated timeline or a request not to contact the hiring team. Follow those instructions. Confirm that your application was submitted successfully before sending another message.
Choose an appropriate time
When no timeline is provided, give the employer several business days to process applications before following up. For a recent interview, use the timing the interviewer gave you. Avoid repeated messages when nothing has changed.
Contact a relevant person
Use a recruiter or hiring contact named in the posting, confirmation, or prior conversation. Do not guess private email addresses or send the same message to several employees. If no appropriate contact is available, continue tracking the role and focus on other opportunities.
Write a short, useful message
Identify the role, state when you applied, briefly connect one relevant qualification to the work, and ask whether any additional information would be helpful. Keep the tone professional and make the message easy to answer.
Record the next step
Add the date and outcome to your application tracker. If the employer provides a timeline, use it. If there is no response, avoid turning one application into the center of your search; keep pursuing other roles that fit your goals.
