Restarting your job search after a layoff
A layoff can make everything feel urgent. Start by separating the tasks that truly need attention now from the work you can spread across the coming days. Your job search does not need to occupy every hour to move forward.
Make a short immediate-priorities list
Gather the documents and contact information your former employer provided, note any stated deadlines, and identify questions to ask the appropriate provider or professional. Keep this administration separate from your job-search list so nothing disappears among applications.
Define what your next role needs to offer
Write down your workable locations, schedule needs, and target responsibilities. Consider related titles that use your existing experience. If you are pursuing both short-term work and a longer-term role, keep those searches clearly labeled.
Capture the work you are proud of
Write several examples while they are fresh: problems solved, responsibilities held, improvements made, and lessons learned. Use your own career facts and avoid taking confidential documents or information from a former employer.
Tell your network what would be helpful
Give contacts a specific description of the work you are exploring. Ask for advice or relevant introductions rather than sending a vague request for ‘anything.’ You can share privately with selected people instead of announcing your situation publicly.
Choose a repeatable rhythm
Set a realistic block for searching and applications, a block for conversations or interview preparation, and a time to stop. Record each next action. If the plan becomes overwhelming, reduce it to one useful task for today.
