An interview preparation checklist you can use tonight
Preparation is more useful when it helps you explain your experience clearly. You do not need a memorized answer for every possible question. Build a few honest examples and understand the work you are discussing.
Understand the role
Read the original posting and highlight its three most important responsibilities. Review the employer’s website and note what is confirmed, what is your interpretation, and what you still want to ask. Do not assume a third-party description captures the whole job.
Prepare three real examples
Choose a problem you solved, a time you worked through disagreement, and a moment you learned or adapted. For each, explain the situation briefly, describe what you personally did, and state the result. If the outcome was mixed, explain what you learned without disguising it.
Practice a concise introduction
Connect your relevant background to this opportunity. Try: ‘My experience is in… One contribution I’m proud of is… I’m interested in this role because…’ Use this as a structure, not a script to repeat word for word.
Prepare questions about the actual work
Ask what the person would need to accomplish in the first few months, how success is evaluated, and how the team works together. Listen for specifics. An interview is also your opportunity to understand whether the role fits your needs.
Check the practical details
Confirm time zone, meeting link or address, interviewer names if provided, and any requested materials. For a video interview, test audio and the connection. For an in-person meeting, plan your route. Keep your resume and a short list of questions accessible.
Leave room to listen
Pause before answering. If a question is unclear, ask for clarification. Explain your own contribution without taking credit for the whole team. Afterward, record what you learned and any next steps the interviewer gave you.
