How to tailor your resume to a job description
Tailoring a resume means improving relevance and clarity, not rewriting your history to imitate a posting. Start with work you have actually done, then help the reader see the connection to the role.
Find the role's central responsibilities
Read the full posting and identify the three to five responsibilities that appear most important. Separate required qualifications from preferred ones, and note any questions you need to clarify rather than treating every phrase as equally important.
Match responsibilities to real evidence
For each priority, write down a project, responsibility, decision, or result from your actual experience. If you do not have evidence for a requirement, do not invent it. Decide whether related experience is transferable and explain the connection plainly.
Move the strongest evidence into view
Place the most relevant summary points and experience bullets where a recruiter can find them quickly. Use familiar job-language when it accurately describes your work, but avoid copying whole sentences from the posting.
Strengthen bullets with context
Describe what you did, the situation or scope, and the result when you can support it. Numbers are useful only when they are accurate. A specific, truthful example is stronger than a broad claim that cannot be explained in an interview.
Review before you submit
Check names, dates, contact details, spelling, and formatting. Confirm that every claim is something you can discuss comfortably. Save the version with a clear filename and record which resume you used for the application.
